A polycarbonate conservatory roof can often be insulated internally, provided the roof panels, seals and supporting frames are sound, watertight and suitable for the additional ceiling system.
Why are polycarbonate conservatories difficult to regulate?
Polycarbonate is lightweight and allows natural light into the room, but older or basic roof systems can transfer heat quickly. This can contribute to summer overheating, winter heat loss and loud rain noise.
How is a polycarbonate roof insulated?
A supporting framework and multi-layer insulation system are fitted beneath the existing roof. The new build-up is then covered with a PVC or plaster internal ceiling. The external polycarbonate roof normally remains in place.
What must be checked before installation?
The roof should be inspected for visible leaks, failed seals, damaged or slipped panels, movement and blocked drainage. Internal insulation should not be used to hide an unresolved roof defect. Older frames may require further investigation or repair before work proceeds.
Can it reduce summer heat?
The insulated ceiling can reduce solar heat entering through the roof. Side glazing, room orientation, ventilation, blinds and outdoor temperature still affect comfort, so no fixed reduction can be guaranteed.
Can it improve winter comfort?
Reducing heat transfer through the roof can help the room retain warmth for longer. The conservatory still needs suitable heating, and draughts, glazing and flooring remain important.
Will it make rain quieter?
The additional layers normally soften the sharp sound of rain on polycarbonate. The improvement varies with the original roof and the intensity of the weather.
Which ceiling finish is suitable?
PVC is normally the lower-cost and lower-maintenance choice. Plaster gives a smoother, more traditional room-like finish. See the PVC and plaster comparison.
How much does it cost?
Sagars’ current starting prices are £1,999 for a PVC insulated ceiling and £2,999 for a plaster-finished ceiling. The measured roof area, shape, access, condition, lighting and preparation determine the final quotation.
How long does the work take?
Many internal ceiling installations take around one to three days. Complex roof shapes, plaster, lighting and preparatory repairs can extend the programme.
What are the alternatives?
Where the polycarbonate roof is damaged or an external tiled appearance is required, a repair or replacement may be more suitable. EcoSlate365 combines a lightweight tiled external finish with internal insulation, subject to survey and structural suitability.
