Does Conservatory Insulation Work?

An evidence-led explanation of how conservatory roof insulation works, what it can improve and which factors still affect comfort and suitability.

Conservatory roof insulation can work well when it is fitted to a suitable existing roof and the aim is to reduce heat transfer through the roof. It can help the room retain warmth for longer in cold weather, reduce solar heat entering through the roof in summer and soften rain noise.

It does not control every part of the conservatory. Glazing, doors, floor insulation, draughts, ventilation, heating and room orientation still affect the final result.

How does conservatory roof insulation work?

A multi-layer insulation system is fitted beneath the existing glass or polycarbonate roof. The new build-up is then covered with a PVC or plaster internal ceiling. The layers reduce heat transfer through the roof and create an opaque ceiling rather than a transparent one.

Will it make the room cooler in summer?

Insulation can reduce the amount of solar heat entering through the roof. It cannot prevent heat entering through side windows and doors, and the room will still be affected by direct sun, ventilation and outdoor temperature. A fixed temperature reduction cannot be guaranteed.

Will it make the conservatory warmer in winter?

Reducing heat loss through the roof can help the room retain warmth for longer. The conservatory will still need a suitable heat source, and comfort depends on the glazing, floor, draughts, room size and weather.

Does it reduce rain noise?

The added insulation and ceiling layers normally soften the sharp sound of rain on glass or polycarbonate. The amount of improvement varies with the original roof and rainfall intensity.

Should the roof be insulated or replaced?

Internal insulation may be suitable when the existing external roof is sound, watertight and structurally suitable. A replacement roof may be the better option where panels, seals or frames are failing, the roof leaks or an external tiled appearance is required.

What does conservatory roof insulation cost?

How long does installation take?

Many internal insulated ceiling projects take around one to three days. Complex roof shapes, plaster finishes, lighting and preparatory work can increase the programme. The expected timescale should be confirmed following the home survey.

Does insulation stop condensation?

Insulation may reduce cold internal surfaces, but it does not remove moisture from the air. Ventilation, indoor humidity, vapour-control detailing and the condition of the existing roof remain important. Existing leaks must be resolved before insulation is fitted.

Is there a guarantee?

Sagars provides a 10-year parts guarantee for the covered components of the installed insulation system, subject to written terms. It does not cover unrelated faults in the existing conservatory and is not automatically transferable.

How can I decide whether it is suitable?

A home survey checks the roof type, dimensions, shape and visible condition and allows the available finishes, lighting, timescale and quotation to be discussed. The survey should also identify visible issues that need further investigation before installation.
